Fergus Falls Chapter, NSDAR, Welcomes You!

On behalf of the Fergus Falls Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) members, welcome. Our chapter was organized in 1899, with members residing in the Northwestern part of Minnesota and Canada. Our primary counties include, but are not limited to, Otter Tail, Douglas, Becker and Norman Counties.

We are a non-profit women’s service organization that values education, historic preservation and patriotism.

About Our Chapter

One of the oldest DAR chapters in Minnesota and the first rural chapter established, the Fergus Falls Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on January 31, 1899. The chapter will celebrate its 125th Anniversary in 2024.

Some historical accomplishments of the local chapter include a World War I campaign to honor George Washington by renaming Prince Bismarck street in Fergus Falls Prince Washington Avenue. In honor of the 1932 bicentennial of the birth of George Washington, a tree was planted and a monument was erected commemorating its planting. Both are located along the Otter Tail River behind Fergus Falls City Hall. Our chapter teamed up with the Otter Tail County Historical Society to develop the Civil War Knapsack, an educational tool containing items of what a Civil War soldier would have carried on their backs. The knapsack is used during history lessons at surrounding schools to give students a direct understanding of what the life of a Civil War soldier would entail. In 2022, our chapter initiated an annual presentation of awards to local people and organizations honoring their efforts to promote historic preservation and national defense activities.

We Make a Difference in Our Communities

Historic Preservation

As part of our historic preservation efforts, our chapter provided headstone restoration for veterans in this cemetery.

Patriotism

Our chapter collects and delivers needed items to the Fergus Falls Veterans Home. Members are encouraged to bring in donations throughout the year and are invited to participate in drop-off events as needed. Pictured is the veterans home administrator with a chapter member displaying several quilts she has made and donated in support of our local veterans. These quilts are given to each new resident, and their family receives the quilt as a lasting remembrance upon passing.

Education

Chapter members dressed up in patriotic and historic attire for a “trunk or treat” event to give back to the community. Hundreds of children and adults were delighted to pose for photos with Uncle Sam, accept a mini U.S. Flag and get a handful of candy.

Become a Member of DAR

Today’s Daughters of the American Revolution is a vibrant service organization for women over the age of 18 who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolutionary War. In October 2019, DAR surpassed one million women who have joined the DAR since its founding in 1890. By subscribing to the DAR Today podcast, you can learn more about members’ activities, Patriot histories, current topics and more.

Minnesota Daughters come from all over our great state, and beyond. They are young women who join to honor a family member, older women who enjoy genealogical research in their retirement years, professional women interested in connecting with other women in the community where they live and others. Whatever your reason for joining, we invite you to connect, encourage you to apply and welcome you to our organization.
